With the long weekend fast approaching and the open road calling, many of us are eagerly preparing for a beautiful weekend away.
Whether it’s a road trip or a weekend of biking, it is important to properly fuel your body so you can make the most out of your weekend.
I don’t know about you but I much rather prepare some #healthy snacks before hand then to waste my precious time at the mercy of a fast food line up.
Here are my top three favourite on the go snacks that will keep your #energy at peak levels:
1. Soft-boiled Eggs
Yes, that simple! Eggs are an eggcellent source of #protein providing nearly 7 grams of protein per egg. They are #nutrition power houses providing the your body with #vitamins A,B,D,E & K, along with omega 3-fatty acids. They contain all of the essential amino acids and are rich in lutein & zeaxanthin (carotenoids).
Eggs are my favourite on the go #food. We usually eat them on sprouted rye bread with fresh tomatoes, onions, a bit of avocado mayo & sea salt. The possibilities are endless with eggs and they will keep you satiated for a long time so you can enjoy more time doing what you love.
2. Summer Time Smoothies
Bursting with flavours and brimming with #nutrients, summer is my official smoothie season. With thousands of possible combinations, the most important thing to remember when making a smoothie is to make sure that it is macro-nutrient balanced (Protein, fat, #carbohydrates).
Be sure to include a good quality protein powder such as vegan or hemp as a base. Then add a handful of your favourite #fruits & #vegetables for a healthy dose of complex carbohydrates. Last but not least, be sure to include a rich source of #essential fatty acids such as coconut oil, chia or hemp seeds. Topped off with homemade or good quality nut milk and voila! A quick nutrient & fiber dense meal that will power you up and keep your #blood sugar levels balanced for whatever adventure awaits you!
3. Power Bowls
Power bowls are all the rage and this summers “it” food. They are a combination of whole #grains, vegetables, protein, oils, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices. The possibilities of different flavours, colours and textures are endless!
Whether you have allergies, intolerances, are vegan or #vegetarian; power bowls are the go to meal for many. These nutrient dense meals can be prepped before and stored up to five days for total convenience. Just remember to keep it macro-nutrient balanced, colourful and use whole food ingredients.
